Driveway Paving in Columbus Ohio: Why Fall Is the Time to Pave
If you have been putting off driveway paving in Columbus, Ohio, fall is your last good window of the year. We have been paving driveways across Central Ohio since 1974, and every October we get the same calls from homeowners who want the job done before the snow flies. The good news is that fall can be one of the best times to pave. The catch is that the window closes fast.
Why Fall Works for Driveway Paving in Columbus, Ohio
Asphalt goes down hot and needs time to cool and compact properly. In the heat of July, fresh asphalt can stay soft for days. In early fall, daytime temperatures are still warm enough for good compaction, and the cooler nights help the surface firm up.
Fall also gives you a chance to fix problems before winter makes them worse. A driveway with open cracks, low spots, or crumbling edges is going to take on water. Once that water freezes and thaws over and over between December and March, small problems turn into potholes and broken sections.
The Temperature Rule We Follow
Asphalt needs the right conditions to bond and compact. As a general rule, we want air and ground temperatures around 50 degrees and rising, with no rain in the forecast. If the ground is too cold, the mix cools before it can be rolled tight, and you end up with a surface that wears out early.
In Central Ohio, the paving season usually winds down sometime in November. Local asphalt plants close for the year once cold weather settles in, and when the plants close, paving stops. That is why the schedule fills up quickly in October.
Signs Your Driveway Should Be Paved Before Winter
Not every driveway needs to be replaced this fall. But if you see any of these, it is worth having someone look at it now:
Cracks wider than a quarter inch, or cracks that form a spiderweb pattern
Potholes or soft spots where the base is breaking down
Puddles that sit on the surface long after a rain
Edges crumbling into the yard
A gravel driveway that washes out or ruts every spring
An old surface that is gray, brittle, and coming apart in chunks
If you are not sure whether your driveway needs a repair or a full tear-out, we covered that in our guide to asphalt driveway replacement in Columbus: repair or replace.

What to Expect on Paving Day
A good driveway starts below the surface. Here is how a typical job goes.
Prep and Base Work
We remove the old surface if needed, then grade and compact the base. If the base is soft or drains poorly, it gets fixed first. Skipping this step is the most common reason driveways fail early.
Paving and Rolling
Hot asphalt is laid with a paver and compacted with a roller while it is still at the right temperature. Edges are shaped and tied in to your garage, sidewalk, and street apron so water runs where it should.
Cure Time
Fresh asphalt needs time to harden. Plan on keeping vehicles off it for a few days. Avoid turning the steering wheel while parked, and keep heavy trucks, trailers, and campers off it for the first few weeks.
Caring for a New Driveway Over Its First Winter
A driveway paved in the fall will come through winter fine as long as you treat it right. A few simple habits help:
Use a plastic shovel, or set your snow blower blade slightly above the surface
Go easy on rock salt the first season, and skip deicers that contain ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate
Keep downspouts pointed away from the edges of the driveway
Wait on sealcoating until the asphalt has fully cured, usually the following summer
Why the Contractor Matters
Two driveways can look the same on day one and perform completely differently five years later. The difference is almost always the base, the compaction, and the thickness of the asphalt. Ask any contractor how they prepare the base, how thick they pave, and how they handle drainage. If the answers are vague, keep looking.
